The Special Olympics is an international sports organization founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports, promotion their physical fitness, personal growth, and inclusion in society. Our Kiwanis Club is a proud supporter of this organization. Our members attend local events yearly by staffing the participants ribbon tables and with funding.
It was another great week to be a Kiwanian. On May 4, 2025, the Special Olympics Fort Loudoun Region Spring Games were held at Loudon High School, Loudon, TN. As in previous years, our members were on board supporting the athletes. Watching them compete in various sports and cheering for them. A perfect day indeed.
Our members have been volunteering at the Special Olympics Spring Games for many years. We had the honor of handing out medals and ribbons to the participants following their events. Seeing the athletes faces light up with smiles never grows old. The perfect finish line.

Bench #103 - A special presentation on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025. Lois and David Nellis exemplify community spirit through their involvement with the Friends of Chesterfield Township Library in Chesterfield, MI. Lois is Vice President and David is an Officer on the Friends of the Library board. Lois is the sister of Joanne Meyer, Kevin’s wife. As many of you know, Kevin is the Tellico Village Kiwanis Club Project Coordinator for A Bench for Caps Program.
Lois and David actively support the caps and lids program in their area. During a conversation, Kevin mentioned a bench donated by our Kiwanis Club to the Tellico Village Public Library. Lois and David questioned if a bench could be acquired for their library. Yes, it was possible! Kevin explained they would need to commit to saving caps and lids and be willing to sponsor the bench. Without hesitation, Lois and David agreed. Bench #103 was transported by Kevin and Joanne on their Thanksgiving trip to visit family in Michigan and presented to the library on November 23, 2025.
The bench holds special significance, dedicated in memory of Shane Stewart. A beloved former library worker who began his journey as a 16-year-old volunteer and tragically passed away in 2024.

Bench #103 - A special presentation on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025.
Lois and David Nellis exemplify community spirit through their involvement with the Friends of Chesterfield Township Library in Chesterfield, MI. Lois is Vice President and David is an Officer on the Friends of the Library board. Lois is the sister of Joanne Meyer, Kevin’s wife. As many of you know, Kevin is the Tellico Village Kiwanis Club Project Coordinator for A Bench for Caps Program.
Lois and David actively support the caps and lids program in their area. During a conversation, Kevin mentioned a bench donated by our Kiwanis Club to the Tellico Village Public Library. Lois and David questioned if a bench could be acquired for their library. Yes, it was possible! Kevin explained they would need to commit to saving caps and lids and be willing to sponsor the bench. Without hesitation, Lois and David agreed. Bench #103 was transported by Kevin and Joanne on their Thanksgiving trip to visit family in Michigan and presented to the library on November 23, 2025.
The bench holds special significance, dedicated in memory of Shane Stewart. A beloved former library worker who began his journey as a 16-year-old volunteer and tragically passed away in 2024.
