Quarterly Commodities Packing and Delivery to Disadvantaged Families
For several years, the Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas Catholic Church and the Tellico Village Kiwanis Club have partnered together to pack and deliver commodities to disadvantaged families in Lenoir City. These commodities are provided by the Mid-East Community Action Agency (MECAA) for Loudon County.
This past March, just before Covid-19 took over, the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club gathered at Memorial Hall in Lenoir City to unload a trailer of food, pack the food items in grocery bags, and deliver them to the families identified by MECAA. The Knights of Columbus help with unloading the truck and packing. Kiwanis members then packed the grocery bags into their cars and deliver the food. We packed food for 41 families. Each family received five bags of groceries; with each bag weighing approximately 20 pounds. Over 4,000 pounds of food were packed and delivered! No small feat indeed.

Back in March 2017, our Kiwanis member Jerry Covert, had a dream of bringing Robotics into our local schools. He spearheaded the Kiwanis Robotics/STEM Program. His unrelenting commitment and enthusiasm made his dream a reality. Working with Technology Officers Jennifer Malone of Loudon County Schools, and Dr. Chris Smallen of Lenoir City Schools, the Robotics/STEM Program began in three Middle Schools of Loudon County and Lenoir City. Dr. Mark Buckner of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Gordon Williams of Roane State Community College offered their assistance and support.
Three years later teachers estimate over 2,200 past and current STEM students have been trained. STEM students receive instruction on robotics each day at all 5 middle/intermediate schools and Loudon High School.
On March 6th, 2020 an Inaugural Battle of the Bridge Competition was held at Loudon County North Middle School. Three schools participated. It was an incredible accomplishment for the students, teachers, sponsors, the Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village, but above all Jerry Covert.

Kiwanis Club April 25th Pancake Breakfast Postponed.
Spring finds us preparing for our biannual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser. This event provides a significant portion of our budget towards supporting our 50 plus projects. Projects that focus on kids in our local & surrounding communities & serve their needs is our main goal. In these uncertain times, we must postpone our spring Pancake Breakfast. Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village has been involved with the Terrific Kids Program for 14 years. We serve three schools: Highland Park Elementary, Philadelphia Elementary and Lenoir City Intermediate School with approximately 250 students participating. “Terrific” is an acronym. It represents: Thoughtful, enthusiastic, respectful, responsible, inclusive, friendly, Inquisitive and capable. The program stresses the importance of good, sound and consistent cornerstones for the life of the students. The Golden Rule is a guiding principle. Be the best person you can be. HEROES AND HORSES PROGRAM - STAR (Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding, Lenoir City)
Is a Therapeutic Riding and Equine Assisted Learning program for Veterans with disabilities or other special challenges in East Tennessee. The Heroes and Horses Program offers therapeutic horseback riding at no cost to veterans. It is designed for disabled veterans at all skill level, including wheelchair bound, PTSD and amputees.
Kiwanis Club of TV sponsors Sampson. A magnificent Chestnut Draft Cross Gelding. Sampson part of the Heroes & Horses Program has the uncanny instincts to know how to provide a wounded veteran the support needed. Simply resting his head against the veteran or ever so slowly and gently walking a trail. Trout in the Classroom Project - The Kiwanis Club Trout in the Classroom Program came to a swimmingly great end this school year. On March 6, 2020 about 60 third graders from Loudon Elementary School went on a Field Trip to the Tellico Trout Hatchery. It was 37 degrees and spitting snow. But that didn’t dampen the excitement. The hardy trout survivors, known as fry, were released into the Tellico River. The program began back in October with the kids growing the fry from eggs. John at the hatchery said they were the most robust release fish he’d seen! This field trip is one of the only chances most of these kids get to visit the forest. March 2nd, 2020 was Read Across America Day. A number of our members volunteered to be Guest Readers at Lenoir City Elementary School. They read books to children from Kindergarten through the 3rd grade.

A BENCH FOR CAPS ABC Promise Partnership - Buddy Benches
Kevin Meyer proposed the Buddy Bench Project as a new undertaking for our Kiwanis Club. The BOD unanimously agreed, and the Buddy Bench was added to our list of projects. Kevin, single handily brought this new project to Highland Park Elementary School in Lenoir City. The principal and teachers were impressed with Kevin’s enthusiasm, the purpose of the project and what it could accomplish. The program began at the start of the 2019 school year with K through 4th grade participating.
Educating school children (and adults) on the importance of recycling. How the environment is affected. What bottle caps are not recyclable and end up in landfills was the focus.
The bottle caps are received from numerous sources. The community, parents, neighbors, churches, civic groups. Kevin has covered all possible sources.
The students own the project. They clean, sort and weigh the caps. Math, organization skills, working together as a group are priceless outcomes.
The benches help reduce social isolation. Children are taught to sit together on the benches. No one should be left sitting alone.
For every 200 lbs of plastic tops collected a Buddy Bench cam be made. The bottle caps are taken to a company and converted via an extrusion process into a bench. The bench is usually installed in the school yard accessible to all students.
The students at Highland Park Elementary School have already collected 238 lbs of caps. Kevin spoke with Philadelphia Elementary. They have introduced the Buddy Bench Program to their school via an after-school enrichment class for P3 Littles, (Positive Peer Pressure) Grades 2-5. This step helps to prepare the kids as they go forward into the P3 Group Grades 6-8.

AMTRYKE PROGRAM The Amtryke program is one of our Kiwanis Club's signature undertakings. An Amtryke is a tricycle specifically designed to match the special needs of a child with physical or mental challenges. The club works with physical therapists in the community to identify these special children for whom and Amtryke would be a benefit. ROBOTICS PROGRAM. THE FUTURE IS NOW!
Back in March 2017, our Kiwanis member Jerry Covert, had a dream of bringing Robotics into our local schools. He spearheaded the Kiwanis Robotics/STEM Program. A BENCH FOR CAPS
ABC Promise Partnership - Buddy Benches
