The Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village presented its 81st Amtryke therapeutic tricycle to a special needs child at Amherst Elementary School in Knox County on Wednesday, May 11, 2022.
It was a special and uplifting occasion thanks to Caleb; the eight-year-old boy recipient. His parents and a sister were there to help Caleb’s classmates cheer him on as he quickly started pedaling his new trike around the school yard confidently and with determination. Steering was secondary in Caleb’s priorities but there is no doubt he’ll master that skill soon!
What makes all this so special and uplifting? Caleb was born with a genetic disorder the name for which is a six-letter acronym with each letter representing one or more medical problems or developmental issues. He has been battling and adapting to these challenges all his life. He is a special and inspiring child. None of the Kiwanis Club members will soon forget Caleb’s gratitude expressed with an insistent hug for each of them when the presentation was concluded.
The Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village has been helping families make the wish of mobility come true for their children for the past eleven years. A number of Amtryke models are available with specific features that address a child’s abilities and size. Each child is evaluated by a physical or occupational therapist to determine the specific Amtryke to best serve the child’s needs. Our club presents the tricycle to the child at no cost to the family. An Amtryke tricycle cost is typically between six hundred and a thousand dollars.

March 8, 2022: Tellico Village Kiwanis Members Rob Orkney, Dan Kuzdzal and Pat Humphrey visited with the Kiwanis Club of Chattanooga.
The Chattanooga club had requested a presentation on our Amtryke Project. Their intent was to gain insight on re-starting their Amtryke Project. Rob and Dan explained how our project operates. They shared perspective on the magnitude of need for Amtrykes. An Amtryke is a therapeutic tricycle ordered with specific features that address the child’s disabilities. Each child is evaluated by a physical or occupational therapist to help determine what special needs are necessary for the tryke.
These two incredible Kiwanis members have assisted 8 Kiwanis Clubs in Tennessee with developing an Amtryke Project for special needs children in their areas. Clubs include Alcoa, Athens, Johnson City, Knoxville, Maryville, Sevierville, Sweetwater and Tellico Plains.
March 9, 2022: Amtryke #80 was presented by Tellico Village Kiwanis Club at the First Baptist Church. Lane a six-year-old boy who lost the use of his legs following an accident last year was the recipient. The therapeutic tricycle will give Lane the ability to be mobile with his own set of wheels. But best of all, he’ll be outside riding with his friends. The tryke will also allow Lane to build upper body strength for his wheelchair and self-care activities.
The Tellico Village Kiwanis Club purchases the tricycle, assembles it and presents it to a child at no cost to the family. An Amtryke purchase averages between six hundred and a thousand dollars. For the past eleven years, our club has been helping families make the wish of mobility come true for their children.

In the summer of 2019, our club added a new project called Buddy Benches. One school, one bench each year was the initial goal, with the hope that every elementary school in Loudon County would eventually have a Buddy Bench.
Eaton Elementary was the only school left in Loudon County without a Buddy Bench. That ended today! Julia Hurley, Just Homes Group Realtor, has graciously sponsored a number of the benches. She made today’s presentation possible.
Highland Park Elementary School in Lenoir City was the first school to join the program with K through 4th grade students participating. Elementary schools Steekee, Philadelphia , Lenoir City, Greenback were next to receive benches. Lenoir City Intermediate/Middle School, Loudon Elementary School, Loudon High School followed. Tomorrow Vonore Elementary School will received their Buddy Bench.
The ultimate goal of a Buddy Bench is to help reduce social isolation. If a child is having a difficult day, they sit on the bench. It is a signal to other students and staff that they need a "buddy". Children are taught to sit together on the benches. No one should be left sitting alone.
Buddy Benches are made from plastic bottle caps that are not recyclable. It takes 20,000 plastic tops to make a bench. Our club collects the bottlecaps, members sort and weigh them. One of our members delivers the caps to Greentree Plastics in Evansville, IN, who converts the caps into a bench via an extrusion process!
Our members came together to celebrate the upcoming holiday season. What a fun filled evening complete with laughter, camaraderie, great conversations, excellent food, a sing-a-long, elves and Santa Claus. ... See MoreSee Less

The attached video is from the Lions Academy in Isiolo County, Kenya. Two of our members funded a new school for the children in 2007. The orphanage is one of our Kiwanis Club projects. The video will melt your heart, guaranteed.

Merry Christmas to you guys
Key Club Members, Loudon HS have been busy elves this December. They participated in a huge food pantry drive. They adopted 8 children through the Christmas Angel Project at Loudon High School. The members purchased new shoes for the kids. No doubt bringing smiles and joy when the gifts are opened. Thank you, Key Club Members. Thank you, Megan Senn, Key Club Coordinator. Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village is so proud to be affiliated with this club. The future is going to be a better place because of these incredible individuals. ... See MoreSee Less

Awesome
The Buddy Bench Project is here to stay!
